Dragon Well Chinese tea was promoted by imperial history
Another key factor that made Dragon Well Chinese Tea so famous is its uncompetitive imperial history.
Dragon Well Chinese tea, also known as Longjing tea, successfully attract Chinese rulers’ tastes.
Firstly in the 17th century, one of the greatest Chinese Emperors, Kangxi( the 2nd emperor in Qing Dynasty) began to make it a tribute tea.
Then it was his grandson Qianlong, the fourth emperor of Qing Dynasty.
In Qianlong’s reign period, he visited West Lake located in Zhejiang province among his several trips to Southern China. When resting in the Hugong Temple under the Lion Peak Mountain, he was offered a glass of Dragon Well Chinese Tea.
In front of the Temple were 18 tea bushes. He was impressed so much that he classified them as “Imperial Trees”.
They were lucky to have an exceptilonal event. There are very few imperial plants in China. These 18 bushes are now visited by thousands of tourists in West Lake each day.
Now, there are tons of tribute teas. Dragon Well Chinese Tea was not the only one. But while other teas perished and were forgotten, Dragon Well Chinese tea’s charms endure to modern China with Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai…
Both of them appreciated it much. They always paid visits to the West Lake tea gardens on abundant occasions. That happened around 1950s.
In our contemporary society, the tradition of tribute tea continues. The Chinese White House (Zhongnanhai) systematically collects in large quantity for their own consumption.
So now it is Chinese president Mr. It is turn for Mr. Hu Jintao and Mr. Wen Jiabao…
On top of that, Dragon Well Chinese tea even attracted former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who visit the tribute tea gardens.
Certainly, Dragon Well green tea became the most imperial tea. No wonder it is often called the Queen of Chinese Tea.
